Not Wanting To Offend People Is Toxic For Society
Have you ever noticed that not wanting to offend people makes our society weaker in basically every way?
That might sound weird to hear, sure. Especially since it's counter cultural to the messaging of being "sensitive" or "aware" or "making sure people are seen".
But if you stop and think about it, what is "not wanting to offend"? It's the self censorship of your speech because you don't want to make someone feel less than, or left out.
For example: "The person in the desk next to you is thinking about getting their next promotion. Now there isn't anything wrong with wanting a promotion. But that person often has to finish talking with something like "but it's not a bad thing if you don't want a promotion! I am not judging you or other people for not wanting a promotion!"
What does that finishing statement do to our society when it's repeated by millions of people across the country in various forms?
It lowers the bar for everyone, the bar of aiming higher.
Because we're all being "sensitive" with our words, we make it completely fine to be not have purpose, to not have hope, to not have a fire in our bellies for something better. Whether it's jobs, more babies, a better relationship, etc.
You not wanting to be negative or offensive means you are not directing people to be positive, not be champions!
It's this weird thing where we don’t point out the people doing it right. In order to avoid calling out the people doing it wrong. Which means we are no longer promoting success or excellence as a society!
How can our society improve if we only focus on not making people feel bad?
Isn't it when you feel bad, that you decide to make changes to improve your life?
